In 2020, I was involved in the development of a VR-Learning Application on the HTC Vive. This application aims to teach apprentices how to change the drill bit on a virtual drill press without putting them in danger while trying on a real one. Since the approach was learning by try and error, no direct instructions were used except a first impulse. The application features:
- a UI that adapts to the work step of the player
- individual hand poses for the tools
- haptic feedback (for example, when the player open the lock)
- possibility to do unnecessary or even wrong things
The VR-Drill was on my part a voluntary project in cooperation with Yasmin Ashimi, Lisa and Marguerite, three students attending the master’s degree “Medien and Bildungsmanagement”. The application was realized in Unity3D in C# with the Steam VR Plugin.
Since they were new to coding, my main part was to provide support in the implementing phase. I worked closely together with Yasmin and was involved in every stage of the creation process. It was the first time for me to program a VR Application, so I learned a lot about VR Development. Furthermore, it wasn’t a game but an application with an educational claim, so I got an insight into a media manager’s range of activities.
Have a look at a test run of the application:
