The Settlers of Sogamingen is a medivial building simulation mobile game. The player can build villages and resource collectors on a GPS Map. Since it has a background server, the player may find other players’ villages on the map. If so, the player can ask for a one-time trade or establish a longtime trading route. Special features of the games are:
- the amount of the single resources depend on the player’s real-world environment
- trading bonus for long time trading relationships
- not completely implemented but part of the original idea: particular resources can just be collected at unique real-world places.
The Settler of Sogamingen was a fourth-semester project with Samuel Knöthig, Lukas Schneider, Luca Türk and Nicolas Arévalo. The game was developed with Unity3d in C# as an android application for the course “Social Gaming”. Therefore, the aim was to create a game that supports social interaction, including a short-term social context and a long-term social context.
Additionally, we cooperated with two game artists, Jana Zwillsperger and Severin Heller. They made amazing 3D objects, which boosted our game’s appearance:
During the project, I was working with Lukas to implement the close-up view of the villages. We built a grid and filled it with tiles according to the data we get from the map view. We spend a lot of time trying to find the best way to move around on the grid. Additionally, we gave each building its characteristics, like a lumber mill can just be placed on a tree and produces wood. We also put the UI on the screen. The Buttons were designed and drawn by me, too:

If you wonder what that human thing is, it’s a monk. You can collect them at holy places in reality. Back in your city, they produce beer in the church to spirit the villager up. Needless to say, the model for the monk was a Jawa.
